DAYS BIRDWATCHING EXPEDITION
Activities
in the itinerary include:

VISIT TO THE ABURI BOTANICAL GARDENS: It is
the first ever botanical gardens in Africa where many world
leaders and have visited to plant trees. It has collected together
a variety score of tropical flora which attracts scores of birds
and butterflies. It also noted for its healthy weather.

VISIT TO THE SHAI HILLS RESOURCE RESERVE:
The Reserve houses interesting fauna such as baboons, lizards,
duikers, snakes, bird, monkey, etc. and habitat of the ancient
Shai. Shai Hills is rich with over 160 species, including ground
hornbills, bustards and parrots.
- VISIT
TO THE ATEWA- ATWIREBU (NORTH OF KIBI): It can
be described as paradise of nature lovers. It houses over 150
different species of ferns and other flora. The forest is filled
with sounds of birds and insects including “Pappillo Antimactus”
one of the largest butterflies in Africa.

VISIT TO THE KAKUM NATIONAL PARK:
It is one of the few tropical rainforest in West Africa. It
contains the first and only rainforest canopy walkway in Africa.
The Kuntan and Sunbird trails provides self guided day hiking
opportunities where you may sight some of the over 200 bird
species like the African grey and Senegal parrots, frazer- eagle
owl, bee- eater, blue plantain eaters, hornbills and kingfisher.
Over 400 butterfly species have been recorded at this site.

VISIT TO THE OWABI FOREST & BIRD SANCTUARY:
It is a designated Ramsar Site and an ideal habitat for winter
migratory birds. Birds found in this area include waterfowl,
hornbills, turacos and parrots among others. At Owabi there
are knowledgeable guides available to assist visitors through
this tropical rainforest along meandering hiking trails around
the Owabi River.

VISIT TO THE BOBIRI FOREST RESERVE & BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY:
The
Reserve houses the Forestry Research Institute showcasing an
arboretum, forest hiking and butterfly sanctuary. Among the
recorded bird species is the highly threatened bare- headed
rock fowl.

VISIT TO THE BUOYEM CAVES & BATS COLONY:
Buoyem is small rural community surrounded by a beautiful landscape.
This is where you find the famous Buoyem caves and Bats Colony
hidden in the dry semi- deciduous forest. These are Rosetta
forest bats.

VISIT TO THE SAKUMONO RAMSAR SITE:
It lies on the Tema- Accra road. It is a designated wetlands
and a ramsar site.

VISIT TO THE SONGHOR LANGOON:
It is an area designated as wetland and a ramsar site providing
sanctuary for many migratory birds. It is a home of different
bird’s species.

VISIT TO THE VISIT TO THE XAVI BIRD SANCTUARY:
Xavi is community based eco- tourism project centred on birds
that inhabits in the area like Cinnamon Chested Bishop, Yellow-
Crown Bishop, Senegal Fire- Finch, Splendid Sunbird, and Senegal
Coucal. There is also the Lotor River where visitors go on canoe
tour.

VISIT TO THE BUNSO ARBORETUM:
This is a protected reserve of indigenous and exotic tree species
introduced in Ghana by the plant genetic Resource center. The
arboretum is an excellent location for bird watching; the arboretum
is home to over 110 species of birds, some of which are rare.
It has an herb garden, which contains many different species
of herbs with a wide range of uses, from food to medical to
aromatic. Furthermore the Bunso arboretum has a butterfly sanctuary
and visitors can see many different kinds of butterflies flying
around the arboretum.
